Three ways businesses can use ChatGPT

Edward Coram James at SEO Agency Go Up outlines the opportunities and limitations of AI-powered chatbots

It’s clear that few technologies will shake things up quite like artificial intelligence (AI) will, particularly for businesses. The latest AI tool on everybody’s lips is ChatGPT, a chatbot released in November 2022 by OpenAI.

ChatGPT uses a type of AI called “Natural Language Processing” (NLP) to respond to users as if it was a human and create content depending on their specific questions and requests. It’s an accomplished researcher, and can phrase and present pages of information from the web in just a few seconds.

Users have been turning to ChatGPT for all kinds of weird and wonderful purposes from writing poems to composing music, but the tool can offer real value for business purposes too. Here are some of the main ways organisations can harness it to bolster their operations.

1. Content creation

ChatGPT can assist organisations in some aspects of content creation, including:

Research

Considering ChatGPT is able to quickly and comprehensively scour the internet to provide relevant information to users, it can be an incredibly useful content research tool. That said, businesses must take into account ChatGPT’s knowledge base has a cut off point of the end of 2021, as well as concerns around the accuracy of the information it provides and potential bias

Ideation

The tool can also be great for content ideation. Simply ask it something like ‘Give me five ideas for articles on tech’ — or whatever topic a user would like to write about — and it will do just that. Such ideas may not be as original as one’s businesses are able to come up with themselves, however.

Content frameworks

Users can even ask ChatGPT to produce entire articles for them considering the tool is able to write full sentences and paragraphs. However, with such content potentially being inaccurate and unoriginal owing to the fact that it’s taken entirely from existing sources, businesses are best off using ChatGPT as a way to create content frameworks instead of full articles.

2. Customer service

ChatGPT can be used to automate customer service interactions.  This process involves training the model on a company’s data set to improve its performance in understanding and responding to customer inquiries. As Apizee explains: “This step is crucial as it allows the model to learn the specific language and terminology used in your customer service interactions, and provide more accurate and relevant responses.”

While chatbots are regularly used for customer service interactions, ChatGPT offers certain benefits over its counterparts. Customer service company Klaus notes that, where standard chatbots are unable to engage in more complex two-way dialogues, “the new GPT variant is much more proficient at simulating human language and is able to respond to more natural user input. It also has an extensive knowledge base and is able to recall previous conversation points and even call out a person for lying.”

Like with content creation though, there are certain limitations to be aware of when it comes to using ChatGPT in this way. For instance, it may not be able to handle more complex or nuanced customer enquiries, it doesn’t provide the same level of personalisation as a human respondent, and it may make mistakes or provide false information.

3. Coding

ChatGPT can be a godsend to developers and non-developers alike who need to code as part of their jobs, which in turn can massively improve business productivity.

Create coding skeletons

The tool is able to create coding skeletons from just a few simple prompts that include a user’s chosen frameworks, technologies, and versions. Individuals can also ask it to check code for any errors, which it will correct if any are found.

Troubleshoot and understand code

One of the most frustrating things for coders is picking up another developer’s project and having to work out code that they didn’t write themselves. With ChatGPT, though, you’re able to decipher code with a single prompt, saving employees time and effort.

Write unit tests

As noted by Level Up Coding: “ChatGPT is competent at writing unit tests and it’s low risk to get test cases from the model, as they will simply fail if they are wrong and will be clearly incorrectly formulated if it’s not testing what it’s supposed to.”

These are just some of the main ways businesses can employ ChatGPT, with other potential uses including language translation, solving maths problems, and generating reports. As the tool becomes more advanced with every OpenAI update, it’s likely that organisations will begin to integrate ChatGPT into their daily operations. However, it is crucial to be aware of its limitations, particularly around accuracy and originality.
