How putting IT teams back in control can help reduce downtime

A single integrated IT operations management platform can help IT teams in smaller firms to control their networks, servers, applications, bandwidth and security

As businesses grow, they will accumulate different IT devices and products – and with those, separate tools to monitor elements such as applications, servers, networks, security and compliance notifications.

For those working in IT teams, this can create a fragmented picture, where it is difficult to keep track of how well individual elements are performing or identify any potential risks to IT uptime and availability.

“Many small or medium-sized businesses do not know what devices they have, or have no proper inventory of what they have inside the network,” explains Sharath Babu R, Product Evangelist and ITOM thought leader at ManageEngine. “How are they classified? How are they interconnected? What are the important devices? How are they layered?”

Consolidating multiple monitoring tools into a single platform means administrators can proactively manage networks, servers, applications, bandwidth and security from one interface, as well as make changes on devices themselves.

ManageEngine’s OpManager Plus is such a system, providing visibility across the entire IT network, including virtual machines and storage devices. “At a network device level, administrators can understand what traffic is on the network at any point in time, and what that bandwidth is being used for,” says Sharath.

Such information can identify instances where employees may be accessing material that is not work-related or in breach of company policy, and could avoid the organisation having to increase its network capacity unnecessarily. Monitoring network traffic effectively can also flag up any anomalies in traffic, which can help identify signs of potential distributed denial-of-service attacks, Sharath adds.

Another benefit is being able to accurately configure backup of all network devices, regardless of vendor. “Companies often have multiple tools from different vendors, and that can be a problem,” says Sharath. “The management module can help IT teams understand the configuration on the network devices and save it as a backup in the database. If there is a problem in the network, they can push that back to the devices.” Agreed configurations can also be pushed out to new devices, rather than having these come onto the network with different settings.

A dedicated firewall module allows for company policies to be implemented across the whole network and its devices and can highlight cases where employees have been blocked from accessing certain material as well as identify redundant or duplicated rules. Another interesting feature of OpManager Plus is rogue detection. If a network admin finds an IP address of an intruder who has connected a personal device, that device can either be blocked or granted access for a period, based on business requirements.

OpManager Plus can also help organisations stay on top of compliance requirements, such as GDPR or Cisco’s iOS policy. “All of these compliance policies can be run against devices to establish how compliant they are and whether any rules have been violated,” says Sharath. It can also suggest default policies and security measures, such as identifying particularly weak passwords that could leave devices vulnerable to hackers.

The ultimate aim, says Rebecca D’Souza, Market Development Lead at ManageEngine, is to ensure high levels of uptime, availability and performance of networks. “Anything with an IP address can be monitored,” she says. “It could be a printer that’s running out of ink, or ATM machines, or even CCTV cameras.

For small and medium-sized businesses, the affordable nature of OpManager Plus makes it particularly attractive. “There are very few players in the market that have everything integrated into one solution,” points out Sharath. “There are tools which cover performance and availability, and they might have another solution for network and performance monitoring. But those are two different tools.”

OpManager Plus is a six-in-one, integrated IT operations management package, which covers network performance, application performance, bandwidth and traffic analysis, network configuration, firewall management and log analysis, and IP address and switch port management, all from the one product. It can monitor both on-premises devices and those based in the cloud.

Many small or medium-sized organisations will be hoping to grow into larger enterprises, so a flexible licensing model is essential for any solution. “If your company is very small, you may only have 500 devices. But if you wanted to scale up to 10,000 in the near future, you could simply move to the Enterprise edition”, says Sharath.

Up to 30,000 devices can currently be supported on the OpManager Plus on-premises model, Sharath adds, and the pricing model means these devices can be split across any combination of network, server and application management and storage features. In some cases, organisations have seen significant savings through reducing downtime, often thanks to automated actions that have prevented incidents from happening.

Apart from reducing downtime, an integrated IT operations management platform aims to put IT teams firmly in charge, says D’Souza. “It’s possible to enable and disable modules,” she explains.

Access to devices can also be managed, allowing IT teams to choose who can make changes to configuration and which people require more limited access. “It’s all about giving IT teams visibility and control,” says D’Souza.
