  • How to get equipped personally to handle the challenges your work throws up
  • The impact and outcomes for each individual will be different

As part of our performance improvement campaign, Dr Suzanne Pollack, programme director for Henley Business School’s Leadership Programme, offers some insights into how good leaders can be transformed into great ones.

Based on her experience of developing high-performing individuals at the globally-renowned business school, Suzanne believes that for many people, the root of the problem is that they become engrossed in dealing with the everyday challenges of business life. And by having a map that shows where the horizon is, even if it’s not immediately visible, gives leaders a focus that vastly improves their thinking processes.

Another aspect of business life that appears to inhibit clear, creative, innovative and effective thinking is that we simply don’t give ourselves the time and space to consider our options. Too often, we make snap judgements in the heat of the moment, and only later recognise that stepping back and assessing alternative courses of action might have been more beneficial.

The great leaders are the ones who have learned – and appreciate – the advantages that can be gained by holding back. As Suzanne says: “They are the ones who find a quiet place in the storm.”

The programme and its outcomes

Henley’s Leadership Programme – made up of a five-day module, followed by a day-day follow-up module – is an intensely personal experience that addresses the individual needs of the delegates and their organisations, making it targeted and relevant.

And for Suzanne, this tailored approach is at the core of the programme’s success, and one of the main reasons it has so many repeat client companies and enthusiastic ambassadors.

“Different people have different challenges and want different outcomes from the programme. By giving each participant one-to-one attention, we can focus precisely on giving them the right tools and techniques to achieve their goals,” she says.

But perhaps more importantly, they learn to “do the right thing” and, as well as being of enormous benefit to their organisations, this is something that translates into their personal lives too, resulting in numerous case studies that Suzanne describes as “amazing, humbling stories about how we’ve changed people’s lives”.
